Andy Backer
Architect

Andy gained his architecture degrees from the University of Manchester (UK) and the University of Michigan (USA). He is a LEED Accredited Professional. He started to specialize in sustainable design since his first semester at university. Living in Virginia (USA), he worked 5 years for William McDonough & Partners as an architect and 2 years for McDonough Consulting as the Communications Director. Andy worked on sustainable projects for Ford, IBM, Herman Miller, GAP, Habitat, etc. He assisted the University of Virginia team on their competition entry for the first Solar Decathlon Competition who won the second prize in 2002. In 2005, Andy started in Bilbao (Spain) his own company, AEB Design, that offers sustainable design and consulting services to some of the largest architecture/engineering firms (such as IDOM who built Bilbao´s Guggenheim Museum) and technology/research centers in Spain (such as Labein/Tecnalia with whom he is helping to develop a new sustainability guide). He also works for Casas Bioclimáticas, a developer that pioneered sustainable construction in Spain. Andy is a collaborating professor at the ESEUNE Business School and a member of the Spanish Green Building Council.
