He was born in Nusaybin and studied architectural history and theory at the Columbia University and the Vassar College.
The author of the books “Turkish Touch in Design” (2007) and “Turkish Architecture Now” (2009), Karakuş works as an architectural critic, theoretician and designer. His occupation is especially related to locality in design, modernism, architecture and urbanism.
He has contributed to publications like Wallpaper, ID, Art Unlimited and Icon and is currently working as the editorial director of the Natura magazine sponsored by IMIB, which focuses on stone architecture in today’s Eurasian region. Karakus was a nominator and supervisor at the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and Mies van der Rohe Awards. He also gave lectures at the Istanbul Technical University, Bilgi University and Politecnico di Milano.
He is the director of the web design company e medya, which provides design service to real estate developer companies like Halen, Berggruen Construction, Metro Group AM, FIBA/Yüksel, Yapi Kredi Koray, Kemer Yapi, Mediterra Resorts and Tekfen-OZ.
He recently works on monographs of the Lebanese architect Nabil Gholam and Turkish designer Tanju Ozelgin, advanced design research on architectural strategies for buildings on slum areas and the integration of medieval Islamic architecture’s mathematics with computer aided design.
