Michael Schwarze-Rodrian is the head of the Department European and Regional Networks and the EU Representative of the Regional Association Ruhr (RVR).
Michael Schwarze-Rodrian, born 1955 in Berlin, has studied Landscape Planning at the
Technical University Berlin in 1970s. He was scientific assistant at the Institute of Landscape
Economy at TU Berlin from 1980 to 1985. His research topic was Protection of soil as a new
field of Federal Environmental Politics in Germany.
In the mid 1980s he came to the Ruhr. In the 1990s he moderated the Emscher Landscape
Park (ELP) in co-operation with the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Emscher
Park. From 1997 to 2000 he was head of the Regional Development Department of the
Kommunalverband Ruhr (KVR).
From 2001 to 2006 he worked for the state run Projekt Ruhr GmbH and was responsible
for the “Masterplan Emscher Landscape Park 2010” – with 20 cities and several regional
From 2007 to 2011 he has been working for the regional Business Development Agency
metropoleruhr GmbH and stimulated the cities at the Ruhr for sustainable development. With
the inter-local working groups of “Concept Ruhr”, “Chance of Change” or the “Knowledge
Report Ruhr” he supported the upcoming Metropolis Ruhr.
Michael Schwarze-Rodrian is now moderating regional networks for an attractive approach
of Metropolis Ruhr to Europe. Michael Schwarze-Rodrian has a great experience with
integrated strategies, project management, regional, inter-local and local moderation and is
an internationally invited speaker for sustainable urban and regional development.
